Anyone on academic staff in the School of Computer Science can potentially act as your supervisor. However, it is advisable to limit your focus to the staff recommended to you by email as they have experience on the MSc ASE programme and are best placed to advise you. If you want to do a project with someone who wasn’t recommemded, please contact the ASE Project Coordindator first to discuss.
You may have a project in mind that is related to some issue you've encountered in your work or during the MSc modules in UCD. Don't start diving into working on your idea until you have a supervisor. You have to find a lecturer who is willing to act as your project supervisor, otherwise you may have to do another project. So start by writing a short (maximum 1-page) project proposal and approach a relevant lecturer to see if they're interested. If it's a well-written proposal that is in their area, they are very likely to be interested.
What can I expect from my supervisor?
It’s a good idea to discuss with your supervisor what sort of interaction you may expect. Some will deal with you directly while others will assign you to a post-doctoral student (who will typically spend more time with you than a staff member can and is likely to more helpful on the nuts-and-bolts side of things). Some will read your report chapter-by-chapter as you write. Some view the report writing as your business entirely. All of these are perfectly fine options, but if you have a strong expectation you should make this clear upfront.
